The pencil cactus, Euphorbia tirucalli, also called firestick for its colour, is a dense cluster of thin, pencil-like succulent stems that branch freely into an upright cluster. In high light the stem tips turn red-orange; in lower light the plant stays green. It's fast-growing for a succulent when light and warmth are adequate.

This plant needs bright, direct or very strong indirect light to develop its signature red-orange colour -- it's an excellent window plant, but the colour fades to green anywhere dimmer. The real limitation is safety: its milky latex sap is caustic and can cause skin burns, severe eye injury, and even temporary blindness, so it must be positioned where it can't be brushed against or broken, away from pets, children, and unaware staff. Cleaning crews should be briefed on the hazard before this plant goes in.
