African milk tree, known botanically as Euphorbia trigona, is an upright succulent with three-sided, ridged stems that branch from the base into a candelabra-like silhouette, edged with rows of small thorns and teardrop-shaped leaves. The deep-red 'Rubra' variety is grown almost as often as the plain green form, prized for its colour. In bright light it reads as sculpture more than plant.
