The nerve plant, or Fittonia, is a low, creeping groundcover that stays under 15cm tall, with spreading stems that root at the nodes to form a dense mat of foliage. Its leaves carry a network of contrasting veins -- pink, white, or deep red depending on the variety -- which is where the 'nerve' name comes from.
In the Office
It thrives under fluorescent and LED lighting, which suits an interior desk, but it's highly sensitive to dry air and leaf edges crisp and brown quickly in low humidity. It isn't a fit for open-plan offices with strong HVAC airflow. It does best in terrariums, glass enclosures, or grouped tightly with other humidity-loving plants, where the shared moisture helps it along.
